HASI faces concerns around lifecycle emissions from clean energy technologies (the energy and resources associated with building out renewable energy technology), land use impacts of large-scale solar and wind projects, and waste generation from components such as solar panels and wind turbines.

The company’s reliance on critical minerals used in these technologies presents supply chain risks. Many of these materials have limited substitutes and are often sourced from regions experiencing geopolitical instability and poor human rights oversight.

Emerging risks also include the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation within infrastructure projects, especially related to data privacy, surveillance in smart buildings, and unequal access to energy efficiency benefits. Additionally, there is a risk of greenwashing if sustainability claims are not supported by rigorous and transparent impact data.
