What the Company Does

Bloomsbury is the largest independent, pure play consumer and academic publisher in the UK. The company was founded by the current CEO, Nigel Newton, in 1986 and came to equity markets in 1994, raising £5.5m. In 1997, the company published the first Harry Potter book. The seven Harry Potter books have been enormously successful, selling over 600m copies worldwide, being distributed in over 200 territories and translated into 85 languages.

In 1998, the company raised £6.1m and launched Bloomsbury USA. 2007 saw the company diversify into academic publishing and in 2024 Bloomsbury entered the FTSE-250 index. 

Bloomsbury combines academic, educational, fiction and non-fiction publishing for the general reader, children, teachers, students, libraries, researchers and professionals. Bloomsbury has offices in the UK, US, Asia and Australia. The company has grown by acquisition over the last twenty years and many of these purchased assets now form part of the company’s digital resources.
