In the second edition, we are talking about wills. Adviser Olivia Bowen answers the question:
“I’m getting married, should I revisit my will?”
"Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, that’s very exciting!
Yes, you should definitely revisit your will. Marriage revokes a will unless the will was written specifically in contemplation of that marriage – and so in most cases an existing will no longer be valid. In addition, updating it ensures your wishes reflect your new situation and that your spouse is properly provided for.
You should look at areas such as who inherits your assets, who you’ve chosen to manage your estate, and whether any dependants need to be considered. Many people put off writing a will if they aren’t sure who they’d like to look after their young children – even if they aren’t born yet! – but this can be addressed via a separate document when you are ready, and so don’t let that delay the writing of your main will.
If you are a blended family, it’s important to protect your children’s interests as step-children can easily be cut out of your shared estate if you pre-decease your spouse. This happens more often than you would think.
It’s also sensible to check related arrangements like pensions and life insurance, as these often sit outside your will.
If you have a large estate or complicated affairs, you can also consider a pre or post-nuptial agreement.
Acting now can prevent complications later and give you both peace of mind that everything is clear and up to date as you start this next chapter together.
