Thematic Report: Palm Oil

Palm oil is the most widely produced vegetable oil in the world and its extensive use in food manufacturing has transformed modern diets, reducing human consumption of other more harmful trans-fats.

It’s featured within foodstuffs like peanut butter, chocolate bars, margarine and ice cream, but it’s also used in consumer products like lipstick, soaps and shaving foam; approximately half of all products sold in UK supermarkets contain it (or palm-kernel oil).

Sadly, the mass production of palm oil has also introduced a number of environmental, social and governance (ESG) concerns.

This thematic report outlines a number of ESG issues associated with the production of palm oil, and considers the steps that thoughtful investors can take to encourage sustainable practices and minimise the environmental impact.
