UK Stewardship Code

Castlefield has successfully joined a limited number of responsible asset managers and asset owners to become signatories of the Financial Reporting Council's (FRC) UK Stewardship Code.

The UK Stewardship Code 2020 sets high stewardship standards for asset owners and asset managers, and is built around 12 principles of effective stewardship, with a greater emphasis placed on transparency standards around stewardship activities than the 2012 code it replaced.

Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI)

We are signatories to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) - the world’s leading proponent of responsible investment. The six Principles for Responsible Investment offer possible actions for incorporating ESG issues into investment practice. In implementing them, signatories contribute to developing a more sustainable global financial system.

PRI signatories are required to report publicly on their responsible investment activities each year. In turn, they receive a number of outputs, including an Assessment Report. Please view the PRI reports for 2023 below:

Employee Ownership Association

In 2009, Castlefield formally transitioned to being an employee-owned company, and as such Castlefield employees are called ‘Co-owners’. At present, current Co-owners own 28.9%* of the company, with a further 47.7%* held by an Employee Share Ownership Trust on behalf of Co-owners.

Living Wage Foundation

Castlefield is voluntarily a Living Wage Employer meaning all Co-owners receive at least the ‘Real Living Wage,’ the only wage rate based on what people need to live.

UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association (UKSIF)

UKSIF is a leading membership organisation for sustainable and responsible finance in the UK. UKSIF’s vision is ‘A fair, inclusive and sustainable financial system that works for the benefit of people and planet and drives positive change.’

Women in Finance Charter

In October 2017, Castlefield became a signatory to the Women in Finance Charter, a charter launched with the objective of achieving “gender balance” within the financial industry, where women at senior management levels are often scarce. Upon becoming signatories, Castlefield committed to maintaining 50% female representation in senior roles.

Carbon Literacy

Carbon Literacy is an awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis. In March 2018, Castlefield became the first Financial Services organisation to have its own training programme certified.

Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter

Castlefield are members of The Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter - a voluntary membership and assessment scheme, created to improve employment standards, and develop diverse and inclusive working conditions across Greater Manchester.

The Charter promotes seven key characteristics of good employment, including fair pay, health & wellbeing, along with flexible and secure work. As members, Castlefield have made the Supporter Commitment and meet the membership criteria in all characteristics of the Charter.

30% Club

In 2019, Castlefield became a signatory to the 30% Club. The 30% Club is a collaborative engagement effort comprised of Asset Managers, Owners and Charities with the aim of engaging with the largest 350 companies on the topic of gender diversity. Its global mission is to reach at least 30% representation of all women on all boards and C-suites globally.

CDP Investor Signatory

Castlefield is pleased to announce that it has become a signatory to the CDP’s disclosure request, furthering its commitment to drive corporate environmental transparency. 

The CDP, formally the Carbon Disclosure Project, is a global not-for-profit charity that operates a disclosure system for organisations to report and track progress on their environmental activities.

Good Business Charter

Castlefield is proud to be accredited by the Good Business Charter (GBC), the initiative of the Good Business Foundation charity organisation, that recognises responsible business practices.

The GBC is open to UK organisations of all sizes and structures, and measures organisations against ten measurable components.

These include real living wage, fairer hours and contracts, employee well-being, employee representation, diversity and inclusion, environmental responsibility, paying fair tax, commitment to customers, ethical sourcing, and prompt payment.

Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare

We are signatories of the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare (BBFAW). The BBFAW is the leading global measure of farm animal welfare and incorporates analysis of food companies’ management, policy, performance and disclosure on the topic.

Since its inception in 2012, it has enabled investors, and a wide group of stakeholders, to engage with businesses to drive improvements in animal welfare.

FAIRR Initiative

We are a proud Member of the FAIRR Initiative’s investor network, helping to build a more sustainable food system by raising awareness of the material risks and opportunities present in global protein supply chains.

La Renaissance

In connection with Burden’s Charitable Foundation (BCF), we are proud supporters of La Renaissance, a school for the blind in Ougadougou, Burkina Faso.
